This text is the work of The Nightingale Research Foundation, a charitable foundation located in Ottawa, Canada and incorporated in 1988 to conduct and assist research into the cause and cure of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (M.E./CFS) and to serve as an educational institution, for the Canadian public, physicians, nurses, teachers and their professional societies.

This text that provides a basis of general information for clinicians and researchers interested in M.E./CFS was initiated by the Cambridge Easter Symposium on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The Symposium was held at Cambridge University, England in April 1990. The Symposium was international in scope and brought together, for the first time, researchers from around the world who were contributing to the growing body of scientific information regarding this disease process.
