– This is remarkable. People are getting rid of their sick benefits the same way it started in 2014 and the Insurance Fund has obviously not adopted this important judgment, says Jimmy Laine.

– It becomes practically impossible for many with ME and fatigue to get their application granted. It’s an incredible number of people who are still being rejected.

Patients suffering from a rare neurological disease that often leaves them bedridden are struggling to get their medication, after a major specialist clinic closed at the turn of the year.

The idea was that the health centers would take over the treatment of the patients, but in Region Uppsala, for example, health centers are advised against prescribing the drugs because there is insufficient scientific support.

“I cried in the car on the way home, I felt so dejected,” says Marie Sundgren, who has the neurological disease ME-CFS.

It is with pride that we can announce that the Swedish Confederation of ME patients’ (RME) vice chairman, Sture Eriksson, has been elected as a member of the Social Insurance Agency’s and Public Health Agency’s consultation with the functional rights movement.

The consultation aims to involve the disability movement in the authorities’ work so that they can work for a society where everyone can participate equally regardless of functional ability. The consultation’s role is, among other things, to increase knowledge about people with disabilities, highlight the consequences of various decisions and provide the authorities with guidance for improved decisions and documentation that must be in line with the disability policy goal.

“During my years within RME, I have seen how different types of disabilities affected individuals’ relationship with the social insurance system, especially the meeting with the Social Insurance Agency.

Unfortunately, often with elements of legal uncertainty. It is therefore an honor to be able to represent the disability movement and work to ensure that those with disabilities are heard and taken into account in all relevant decision-making processes”, says Eriksson.

Through his previous professional experience, as associate professor and specialist in Geriatrics and General Internal Medicine, Eriksson has extensive clinical and research experience in issues related to functional impairments.

Eriksson also has a background as a member of the Administrative Court and County Court, something which, among other things, has given him a good insight into legal and other principled issues surrounding disabilities and their meanings and effects both from a physical, psychological, social and legal perspective.

Eriksson’s election shows RME’s growing influence and commitment to improving conditions for people with ME and other disabilities.
